Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch is an American action-fantasy film written by Steve Shibuya and Zack Snyder, and directed by Snyder. Sucker Punch features an ensemble female cast that includes Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, and Jamie Chung. The film follows a young girl in the 1950s about to be lobotomized as she attempts to escape an asylum with her inmate friends.

Watch the trailer.  As you can see, there’s a lot of Steampunk influence in there.  In fact, this movie has more Steampunk in it than many other pure Steampunk imaginings (like Riese Kingdom Falling, for example).  Snyder has described the film as “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns”, including dragons, B-52 bombers, and brothels. Snyder’s wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder concludes, “in the end, it’s about this girl’s survival and what she needs to do to be able to cope.”

“Sucker Punch” is an epic action fantasy taht takes us into the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality.  Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between what’s real and what is imaginary.

That’s right, I own it on Blu-Ray!  I love movies that set the mind free.  It’s on the same level as the Matrix and 300.  A definite must-see and must own.

Have a look at the teaser trailer for the upcoming SteamPunk movie “The Marionette Unit”.  It looks intriguing, and the production quality reminds me of something older, like a TV serial shot in England 10 to 20 years ago.  The overall atmosphere is warm, and there’s a certain realistic feel that I like.  Awesome job for a trailer.

I can only surmise that these villains are turning this poor girl into some kind of puppet, and the first connection reminds me of the Matrix.  What the Hell is going on?  I want to see more!  Excellent…

When did YouTube become such jerks about allowing thumbnails?

[Narrator Voice-Over] In a time…  of post-apocalyptic destruction.  Mechanical ragdolls have risen from the ashes of the old world to replace mankind.  But in the darkness lies an evil robot monster that feeds on the souls of slain ragdolls.  Only ragdoll #9 is left to fight alone in a desperate attempt to save their dystopia, and free the undead.

Why YouTube? Why can’t I have a preview??

This is now a big-budget film with Tim Burton’s name stamped on it.  It was based on a short film of the same name.  The little mechanical ragdolls are cool.  The big movie website, and the original short-film on YouTube.  The plot (Wiki) is compelling, and the movie trailer makes it look very interesting.  I’m certainly going to see this on the big screen.  Oh, and watch the above trailer all the way through, because there are two of them one after another.

War of the Worlds: Goliath – by HeavyMetal

H.G. – You’re about to have your ass handed to you

It’s an R-rated, retro-history, [1914 steampunk epic], fourteen years after the first failed Martian invasion. Mankind has rebuilt her cities and [the military is] adapting a lot of the abandoned Martian technology… Think of “Band of Brothers” meets “Star Wars”… It will be cool, steam-powered battle tripods, doomed Cossack cavalry charges, Victorian deco, steampunk Manhattan, 1,500-foot-long armored battle zeppelins, Teddy Roosevelt, souped up tri-planes, blood on steaming metal, sex in the cockpit. The usual… It will have a budget of around $3 million, and be produced by Tripod Entertainment… and is being co-produced by Kevin Eastman (owner of Heavy Metal).

I really hope they get this one right.  The 1st Heavy Metal was cool, but old.  The 2nd was more modernized, but did little to hold my interest.  However THIS should be a big win; I just don’t see how it ties into the other two – maybe there’s a hottie in there somewhere with a steamwork sword…  Check it out: “War of the Worlds: Goliath”
